East Coast, 2007
So yes, the trip.  Despite my silence on the subject, we had a rather lovely time.  It was quite exhausting (I am officially too old for road trips, I think) and there were quite a few bumps to overcome --we really did mean to rent bicycles, if only we could have found someone willing to rent them-- but aside from that, I enjoyed myself thoroughly.

Our very first picture, taken in Moncton, because, seriously, who does that?

Our b&b in Charlottetown.  I know.

It gets better, though, because this was my *personal* study.

We ate at the place with the green umbrellas.

Green Gables, which was... an emotional journey.  Let's not talk about that, shall we.

The red eyes are due to allergies, not nostalgia, really.

The haunted woods.

And wandering lane.  ::sigh::

Do not pick the Lupins.  Um, oops.

About a minute before I pulled out my camera to take this shot, several dozen birds erupted from this cliff and took off over the ocean.  It was... there are no words.

There was more touring, some beach dwelling, and lots of shopping before we took the ferry over to Nova Scotia.  I had to pee, and so we stopped at a public bathroom right next to this waterfall.  Very cool.

The above picture is our hotel in Halifax.  It's famous, because Oscar Wilde stayed there during his 1882 North America tour.

I think the four poster bed and pillars speak for themselves.

You have no idea how exhausted I was at this point.  I think I actually nodded off waiting for our dinner.

Some of historic Halifax.

Including a church I fell in love with.

And the burying grounds, were I spent an entire half day reading while seated on someone's crypt.

We also did a brewery tour, which was... weird.  Very weird.

Finally, this is the site of the December 6, 1917 Halifax Explosion.  I'm a little obsessed with the subject at the moment, and, as such, am exceedingly depressed.  I want to write stories about this disaster.  I just need to figure out how to do that.

Anyway, that's a small sample of our trip (I actually took 357 pictures --yikes!).  I think my next vacation will consist of less driving/walking and more sitting on a beach and reading.  Maybe.  I, oddly enough, didn't take many pictures of our drive home, despite the beauty of Maine (and Portland, btw, is my new favourite city --for serious, I need to move there), but it can be summed up as follows:

Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire are stunning, lovely states.  Upstate New York bites.  And then blows.  And then sucks for good measure.  I fucking hate that state.  HATE it.  But we won't get into that.  Really.

Beautiful pictures as usual. I especially loved the haunted woods, must be my dark side taking control... :)

As for the first picture, 80% of the signals around here have been artistically 'modified' like that. I thought there were no morons in those beautiful areas but I guess it's a small world like they say, right? ;)

I'd never seen a modified 'signal' before, so I had to take a picture, and then laugh and laugh. It was quite amusing.

Green Gables! And the woods, and the path, and the cliff, and Neko! It is all just gorgeous, too beautiful for words.

Wow.

I don't know if I could actually approach Green Gables, so you're a better, more emotionally stable person than I! What an incredible experience that must have been. I feel a weekend with the movies coming on...

It was... very overwhelming. I kind of cried, a lot. I don't think I could go back, actually --it was so surreal and nostalgic. I am very glad I went, though.

I'm glad to hear that you two had such a lovely time. And these are some wonderful photos too!

The pictures of downtown really make it look like nobody was around. How in the world did you pull that off? Also, I can understand the love for St. Mary's. That church wins best Halifax church every year in our free newspaper's readers poll. It definitely is a beautiful aspect of downtown.

Oddly, downtown wasn't really all that busy, but we were there during the week, not on the weekend, so maybe that was it. Also, and I forget this constantly, Halifax is small. I couldn't get over how small the population was, or even how quickly you could walk from one end of the harbour to the other (well, ok, it did take a few hours, but still). I just assumed, then, that the downtown core wasn't a busy place. At least, not Montreal/TO kind of busy, anyway.

And yes, so much love for that church.

Thanks for sharing your photos! I was just talking about that Anne-girl yesterday with my sister. Her 11 year old has just been read the books and so she netflixed the movies for her kids to watch. And then of course she re-read them herself. Anne and Marilla and Matthew; they are love. And then to see photos, excellent.

I think every little girl should read Anne. It's still one of the cornerstones of my childhood --the book, the movie, everything. It was quite the emotional pilgrimage.

It sounds like New England is a beautiful place to visit. A road trip might be a little tiring, but it's often memorable!

Lovely pictures, thanks for sharing. And I barely recognised you, with longer hair than last year!!

It really was exhausting. I don't think I'd do it again --I'm not as young as I used to be.

And yeah, the hair is getting long, isn't it?

Beautiful pictures. Where in New Hamphsire were you? *feels a little homesick* I miss New England.

Did you take the ferry from Nova Scotia to Maine? We did when I went to Canada when I was a wee little Rachel.

Pretty much just on the I95. We actually drove, though, because the ferry left/arrived at bad times, and was very expensive. The drive was nice, though, because New Brunswick is stunning to see.

Hey, if you were on 95 in NH, you would have gone right through the area that I'm from. :)

Yeah, mostly out of laziness. I stopped shaving for the winter, and then just couldn't be bothered once it got warm.

I'd actually like to see it in the winter, because city's are very different depending on the season.

Lovely pictures! Seeing Green Gables would have made me emotional, too. (I still have the copy of Anne of Green Gables that I bought when I was 10.)

Glad you had such a good vacation! And I'm glad you're back.

I'd lost my copy, so I bought a new one last winter. I'm so glad I reread the story.
