Applying math to fandom, whee!

  • Sep. 13th, 2006 at 2:40 PM
Today I want to talk about fandom, or, more specifically, fanish interpretation of fandom with respect to source material. Confused? Don't worry, it'll all make sense.

My own fanish experience is fairly vast, and yet, I'm going to limit my thoughts to the three fandoms I currently follow (and note that follow does not necessarily imply participation). I'm going to examine each in turn, not in terms of the source material itself (although spoilers may be presented) but rather, in terms of fanish interpretation of said source material.

This entire entry is a generalization, based entirely upon my own observations. As such, most of my analysis will come across as irrelevant to individual fans, as each individual's experience will be different and result in differing points of view.

Long story short, this is me rambling, with no real purpose. I am looking at this from an entirely academic view point, so no 'wank' is intended. In fact, to drive this point home, the entirety of my analysis is later expressed in a mathematical formula.

The 10 hour was a winner for NBC also with the season finale of ER taking in a 7.2/19; CBS was second with the season finale of Without a Trace at 6.0/16.

source

At 10, NBC regained the lead with a 7.2 for the ER finale, followed by CBS with a 6.0 for the finale of Without A Trace and ABC with a 2.3 for Primetime.

Leading into said broadcast was the special "Will & Grace: Say Goodnight Gracie" (households: 8.4/15, #6; adults 18-49: 5.2, #5) and the season finale of "ER" (households: 10.8/18, #4; adults 18-49: 7.3, #3).

CBS (households: 12.6/20, #1; adults 18-49: 5.9, #2) then had to settle for second place with a repeat of "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" (households: 9.2/16, #5; adults 18-49: 3.7, #8) and the season finales of "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" (households: 15.7/25, #1; adults 18-49: 8.2, #T1) and "Without a Trace" (households: 12.8/21, #2; adults 18-49: 6.0, #4).

Anyone surprised?

And so it is

  • May. 19th, 2006 at 9:02 AM
This morning dawned clear and bright, and warm, and made me happy. Since then dark clouds have rolled in, each of them threatening rain. Oddly, this has excited me. The weather is volatile, much like my fragile emotional state.

I have fixed the problem --WaT related )

I've also decided that, because I am just a little in love with House/Wilson, that I do want to play with them. That being said, I don't really want to play in the fandom. So I'm starting my own fandom. A fandom of one. Anyone who wants to join is more than welcome to.

ETA: I forgot to mention. I won't be around this weekend. I'll answer my emails tonight, but then I'm going off to spend the weekend on a farm, where I will be playing with horses. Yay! Horses.

ETA2: For those that missed it, aesc's absence is temporary.

Oh, CBS, you really are clueless.

Heh. I just read the best article. You can find it here:

On TV: Characters I'd like to ax

My favourite part?

Elena Delgado, "Without a Trace," 10 p.m. Thursdays, KIRO/7 (CBS)

Why: Goethe said, "A useless life is an early death." So by that definition, Delgado (Roselyn Sanchez) became one of the walking dead soon after she joined this series. Seriously, does she add anything to the show besides lovely hair? We see no reason that she shouldn't go missing in the season finale.

Death by: Who knows? Like this character's purpose, the body will never be found.

Meta, of sorts

  • Mar. 31st, 2006 at 10:23 AM
I probably shouldn't be doing this today, because I'm kind of busy at work and taking the time to ramble will likely screw me over in the end. I can't quite help myself, though, so here goes.

This post will contain rambling. And fanish things. I'm going to talk about WaT (including spoilers from 4.18), relationships, The Evidence and fandom in general.

Consider this my meta post for the year. )

ETA: I'm not the only one )

Question

  • Mar. 22nd, 2006 at 12:43 PM
I haven't actually seen the new US TV guide with the WaT article, but I've read bits of bad scans and seen photos and now I have a question.

which I will cut, so as to not spoil )

Now, onto more important things. What to watch tonight. The Evidence. Or Heist. I've heard good and bad things about both, and they're both on at ten. I think, judging from articles, that I'll go with The Evidence and record Heist. Yes, that is a good plan.

So I'm petty, sue me.

  • Mar. 16th, 2006 at 1:05 PM
So I'm sure by now you've all heard that the FCC has fined WaT for indecency?

Yes? No?

So I'm thinking about sending the FCC a fruit basket. Maybe even a thank you card.

Why? You might ask.

See, technically the fine is for Sons and Daughters, but I can't help but feel like this is the universe's way of punishing WaT for being so bad this season. You know? Like all of us fangirls were ranting and bitching and the universe said; you know, you're right, let's fuck them up the ass to teach them a lesson.

And now? Balance has been restored and all is well.

I probably shouldn't be nearly as giddy as I am.

~~ <--random topic break.

I only got through ten chapters last night. Gah, that leaves me twenty tonight, which I suppose won't be too bad, since it's repeat week and all. Still, the next time I offer to write a thirty chapter story, kill me.

Spoiling you all

  • Feb. 22nd, 2006 at 8:27 PM
First off, [info]duckduck!  I got your v-day card.  ::sniff::  Thank you.  I miss you too.

Now, it's come to my attention that people aren't aware of a big ass D/M spoiler. This is in *addition* to the one posted in [info]wat_slash.

So I thought I'd share )

nothing worth noticing

  • Feb. 2nd, 2006 at 11:06 AM
For some reason I am exceedingly nervous today. Like sick to my stomach anxiety nervous. I'm actually kind of having a panic attack and I don't know why.

Part of it is stress, I imagine, because I have a day and half left to finish everything up at work, and I'm leaving in the whee hours of Saturday morning and haven't even thought about packing. Tonight I have laundry to do and fic to finish and Friday will be mass running around to try and get everything done.

Then there's the whole going on a trip thing, which always makes me skittish. Oh, God, what if I've completely forgotten how to speak French? Stranger things have happened, after all.

Finally there's WaT tonight, which always makes me nervous, because the show can't help but be bad and I'm so terrified they're going to do something stupid. It's sad, really, that a television show belongs on this list.

but then I read spoilers and think, yeah, it's totally worth getting nervous over )

Okay, not helping, because now I'm sure I'm going to be sick. I'm starting to think I need to be permanently tranquilized.

FYI

In the process of making caps, I have learned something useful.

Martin takes 3 creamers in his coffee (technically, he only put in two, but he wanted the third and gave up when he couldn't get it open).  No sugar.

ETA: Caps are up:

http://www.dannyandmartin.com/patientx.htm

Now I just want it to be Friday.

It's sad, really, that I'm not looking forward to WaT tonight. That I am, in fact, dreading it. Considering downloading it and watching it while drunk on the weekend. All things considered, that may be the better plan.

Even reading the small surge of D/M fics last night did nothing to fuel my enthusiasm. Quick, someone tell me it'll be okay. Or you know, hold me while I mourn the loss of my show. Even last year (and this is saying something) wasn't this bad. Oh Hank, *smites you* for leaving us.

Sorry, guess I'm still bitter that all my favourite characters have become/are becoming mere shadows on the show.

In happier news...

Work isn't busy, so I'm going to do some writing this afternoon. There's the super!sekrit project and possibly the BWOC/WaT crossover fic from hell. Should be fun. And yes, I will convert you all to Tommy/Merton even if it kills me.

Incidentally, Caroline, I'm now understanding why you went to all that trouble copying episodes off VHS and making DVDs for all of us. I'm seriously starting to consider starting up a dedicated server, uploading the episodes and demanding that my entire flist download them. *ponders logistics* *and cost*

Oh look, someone already did that. And I tested it, and it works.

http://www.dewknight.com/bigwolf

It looks like they have almost all the BWOC episodes from every season.

PS, small amusing WaT spoiler )

Ouch

  • Nov. 18th, 2005 at 12:55 PM
At 10 p.m., "Without a Trace" posted a 13.8/23 for CBS. NBC's "ER," 10.2/17, narrowed the gap between first and second considerably (and led the hour in adults 18-49).

ER's ratings have increased every week since Elena showed up. I'm not saying that's the cause, but the first two episodes of WaT kicked ER's ass and now ER's gaining ground, taking over the coveted 18-49 target group and I can't help but think the two are related. I've seen too many people give up on WaT and announce they're going to start watching ER to make me think otherwise.

Then again, I've been known to be delusional.

I wore a toque today. First time this winter. I love toques. Like love, love, love. I own more toques than I do anything else. I swear I've got at least one toque for every day of winter. And I still want more. And they're all colourful and funky with pompoms and ear flaps. Some of them even have little strings attached to mittens. I should take pictures of me frolicking outside in my toques and post them so that you can see I'm not exaggerating. Except, of course, I doubt anyone would care, so you know...

Wow, did I just ramble about toques? I must be bored. Probably a sign I should go do some work. Or you know, write some fic. We'll see what the day brings.

Mmmm.... Danny ass

  • Nov. 4th, 2005 at 7:58 PM
Apparently I'm productive when I'm sick.  My sites are updated.  Virginia's edited and archived.  And I made screencaps.

First things first; a little present.

Superheroes, by Esthero which is practically the theme song for Virginia.  I actually almost named the story Superheroes.

Second things second:

Viuda Negra caps.

Third things third:

picspam involving Danny's underwear --and bare ass at that )

*g*

I love coming home to emails in my inbox.  A lovely little faerie (name protected) sent me this little tidbit, and has been kind enough to give me permission to post it here.

Dude, Eric's a Danny/Martin fan? Who knew? )

Okay, I'm done.  I'm going to go finish my next chapter now.  And eat, because fuck am I hungry.

Food porn, now with pictures

For some strange reason, my Danny/Martin love has been renewed ten fold. Funny how that happens, eh?

Anyway. I've been thinking a lot about the sharing of food and how it speaks to the bond between our boys. Because, really, we've already established that Martin's a stress eater, so the fact that a lot of Danny and Martin's interaction surrounds food really does say something.

Meep

I am practically sick with worry over tonight's WaT. I don't think it's healthy to be this consumed with a show.

It's actually making me a little crazy; I can't write, I can't read, I can't eat, I can't sleep, I can't function. In fact, pretty much all I've done is pace. And try not to throw up.

It's official. I've gone insane(r).

Feel free to ignore this spam. I'll back back later with WaT squee/rant, provided the wait doesn't kill me.

ETA: omgwtf? )
